[ she could. especially considering vax is also currently staring at the ceiling in his room, which is up directly against the wall where vex's is. the only difference is he's scrolling through the network, reading conversations, digitally listening in.
the sound of her voice doesn't surprise him. if anything, he'd been expecting it for a bit. ]
About? [ he's still scrolling, still checking on things, his legs leaning up against the wall. ]
only for five minutes THEY HAVE TO AT LEAST PRETEND THEY'RE NOT ATTACHED AT THE HIP 90% OF THE TIME
[ As if they'd ever choose any other rooms, tiny as these are. They're free and that's the main thing, but they're not really theirs yet, and after a minute, she sighs and sits up, the thin mattress creaking. ]
It's not an entirely terrible idea. [doesn't sound convinced however]
[ he'd seen vex on that post. he knew she wouldn't be able to say no to the cash for that long. when he hears the bed creak through the wall, vax finds himself exhaling once, turning the device off and tossing it onto the bedside table. ]
No, not entirely. But it did sound a little boring. [ he reaches back and crosses his hands behind his head, eyes still up on the ceiling. ] Why, are you thinking about it?
[ Spoken not from a room over but from his doorway, dark braid slipping over her shoulder as she leans in and around the door frame.
Vex craves stability. And one of the most secure ways of attaining that is through money, and she'll make sure everyone can be taken care of by whatever means necessary. But.. ]
[boring: that gets the slightest roll of her eyes] I'm thinking the basic idea sounds promising. But there's too many loose ends for my liking.
[ he looks up from the bed towards the door to see her standing there. and after a moment of watching her, vax sighs and moves, tossing his legs over the edge of his bed and sitting the right way up, leaving room on the bed next to him if she so decides to come sit with him.
why vex would want to join something like this doesn't surprise him. if anything, he would have expected her to be the first to volunteer. work like that pays better than most of the other stuff they could find themselves doing. ]
Like what? [ and half the reason for the question is just because he knows vex wants to talk about it, and half his own curiosity. he'd been ready to jump in and go for it, but he'd default to vex's opinion on it no matter what. ] Like how she used to lead armies and now wants to organize a handyman gu-group?
[ The more things change, the more they stay the same. Vax moves and Vex follows, his feet touching the floor in time for her to sink onto the bed beside him, body immediately leaning in to his so that their shoulders, their arms, their elbows are touching.
Her eyes don't meet his, fixing instead at a point between her boots, a particular spot of dirt on the floor. ]
I admire the enthusiasm. She certainly seems confident of her own skills. But.. [a huff] I'd rather not run into another Slayer's Take situation.
I think guilds could even be good for business, the city's and ours, but I suppose it depends on what sort of work we want, here. Since we're stuck here, and all.
[ vax moves, and vex settles next to him, and it's right. he feels whole. each spot that their bodies touch, with vex leaning up against him and vax leaning his cheek on the top of her head, he's safe. they're both safe. magical items or no. ]
Hmm. [ it's a thoughtful noise, considering what she's saying and what he found out on his own. ] I don't know if this could be another Slayer's Take. Have you heard of any hydra around here?
[ vax hopes not. gods he hopes not. with just flame-tongue he's in no state to be taking anything down. and he doesn't remember seeing his sister very well equipped either, considering what they're used to. ]
We could always go back to our roots. [ but even vax can't quite keep the amusement out of his voice. ] Picking pockets and hunting. It'll be like old times?
[Pike tracks down a very particular person in the house, someone that she's on very common ground with. She has a feeling that Vax speaks to the Raven Queen as much as she speaks with Sarenrae, and she really wants to clarify something.]
[ he's probably in a common area somewhere, bored but hanging around, so he won't be hard to find when pike comes strolling through. ]
For you? Never, Pickle. [ he does sit up a bit and smile at her when she comes in the room, scooting over on whatever he's been sitting on if she wants to join him. ] What's up?
[She gives him a smile in return, then climbs up onto the seat next to him.]
I wanted to ask... have you been able to contact her yet? [He should know exactly what 'her' Pike speaks about.] The only reason I ask is because I've been trying to talk to Sarenrae and it's like... it's like they're not going through.
[ he should have known that's what pike wanted to talk about, but the question still catches him a bit off-guard. which is easy enough to tell, with how he kind of blinks at her and then sits back again, like he has to think about it. ]
I don't...know. [ which is the most honest answer he could give. ] Most of the time I pray I don't really...expect an answer? So if there's something happening with the connection, it hasn't stuck out.
[ part of him...almost feels guilty. like it's just another obvious tell how out of his depth he is with this. he accepted his place at the mother of ravens' champion, there's no question about that, but when he talks to pike, watches pike and her relationship with sarenrae, he realizes just how. not. he is at all of this. ]
My magic still works, and that's from her, so I don't think we're completely cut off? [ a pause, and then vax sighs. ] I'm sorry, Pike.
...oh. [She's always felt the warmth of the Everlight when she prayed, so when he mentioned he never expected an answer from the Raven Queen, it threw her.
It's alright, though. Everyone has different relationships with the gods, and it also depends on the god. Not everyone was as... welcoming as Sarenrae.]
Mine does too, but I just thought it was kinda weird, you know? [She gives him a smile.] There's no need to be sorry! We're in a weird place. There's bound to be hiccups.
[ there's only so much presence of death that vax can handle, and considering his ever-present tendency to feel it around him always before the agreement with the frost queen, he hasn't noticed more or less of it since. ]
Sorry. [ he realizes he's just repeating himself now, but it's true. ] She does...or did talk to me, if I really needed her to. But I haven't really tried? Recently. [ a pause, and then... ] Have you not been able to talk to her? Saranrae, I mean.
[ because that could potentially be....really bad. ]
[She shakes her head.] I haven't been able to get anything or even a feeling from her since we've arrived.
[She looks down, biting at her lip. Her magic is still in tact and her holy symbol is still whole, so she knows that she's still in Sarenrae's good graces, but she can't help but think that something's... wrong.]
[ On the doorstep of Vax's house he'll find a box with a note attached. Inside he'll finda fine dagger. The note reads: "Vax'ildan. We haven't known each other long but I wanted to thank you for the help with those criminals. I saw you had a way with daggers so here is another for your collection. Happy Wintersend. -Sen " ]
[ vax will find the present and the note. will read it over and check the dagger and then - once he's tried it out for a little bit - he'll shoot sen a short message. ]
got your gift. you didn't need to, but thank you. i can definitely use it.
I never say no to few more good rogues among my friends.
After all, we did make a good team against those assholes, but I'm sure there's more to friendship than that. I hear drinking is a good hobby for that.
[ at some point the day before the gala, someone passing vax'ildan on the street will slip him a note. before he can get a glance at who it was, they'll already be gone. the note itself is simple: ]
[ the fact that someone was able to disappear without him getting so much of a glimpse is enough to put him on edge, but then there is the message. the conversations he's had. he knows what this is about (or likes to think he does) and decides, then and there, that he'll play along.
come the ball - he will be wearing an olympian crest. and he will most certainly play. ]
[ This morning, a seemingly small gift in a cloth bag tied with coloured string bears a tag with your name on it. Inside said bag is a metal door key, deep iron grey, with a small tag attached - directions to a location on the outskirts of the slums, where larger buildings can be found.
The directions in question bring you to one such building, L shaped and dark, not likely lived in as of late. Sturdy looking, with solid oak doors, but the windows are dusty and the roof looks like it's seen better days - and probably a few leaks. Walking to the front door presents you with a lock: one your key fits in. Pushing it inwards leads to a shadowed lobby, a bit dusty from disuse, but recent prints across the floor lead you to a table. With an envelope propped up against a rusted three-prong candelabra, the words "To My Family" scrawled in that same hand as on your key. ]
Hello Darlings,
If we are to stay, then we need a home, and after looking for something that would suit all our needs, it is my hope that we could make this one ours here.
I found this place last month when on one of the mercenary jobs, and since then it's been on my mind constantly. I've not yet put ink to paper to formally sign the lease, but I have reserved first rights for us. I know this is no GreySkull Keep, with a bit of luck, hard work (and silver where necessary), we could make this house liveable. I've sketched the floor plans overleaf, please take a look around, and we can make a decision at dinner tonight. I have the silver saved (and yes, I absolutely haggled the price down given it's current state) but I'm not committing to anything if this doesn't work for us.
Merry Winter's Crest.
Love, Vexahlia
[ Two other parchment are included in the envelope, showing a basic sketch layout of the building's ground floor and upper level. Go forth and explore! ]
----
OOC: I may have had too much fun playing with Illwinter's Floorplan Generator and been seized by an idea for the long thought about Wyver home for Vox Machina. And of course, the linked plans are just Vex's example of how the spaces could be filled - definitely not a final design, this is very open to edits! (ICly, the house is mostly empty even of furniture, thanks to the previous tenants/owners being long long gone.)
