CHARACTER NAME: vax'ildan
CANON & HISTORY: critical role, campaign one pre-campaign info, vax wiki, episode summaries
AGE: 28
CANON POINT: episode 95 "One Year Later..."
PERSONALITY:
Vax'ildan is, for all intents and purposes, a product of his circumstances. Born to both elven royalty and human peasantry, he found that true acceptance came not from his father's stiff family or the arms of human society, but through his own path and his own choices. He and his twin sister early on in their life found themselves - perhaps unhealthy - very much attached to each other, and for a long time, that was all they needed. They completed each other, two halves to a whole soul and the only one the other could really, truly, trust. This created a safety net and a purpose for each of them - because no matter what, they had the other to worry about and to keep walking for - and Vax takes that incredibly seriously. Vex'ahlia, for most of his life, was Vax's everything. And while, more recently, his heart has opened up to include a few more, he still has some unhealthy instinctual reactions when it comes to his baby (by a couple of minutes) sister.

On the outside, Vax can come across as a fairly open person. He wears his heart out for the world to see, his reactions sometimes loud, and easily read. There is a good part of him that is fairly easy-going - quick to joke, and play games, and even laugh if the situation calls for it. If there is ever a moment you want to know what this rogue is thinking, you can simply watch his face, his shoulders, his hands - his body gives him away more than his words will - his smile bright, but his frown taunt. An easy-going Vax has no issue cracking jokes, but a worried Vax is just as quiet, withdrawn, and shadowed. He holds grudges - particularly when his sister is involved - and is sometimes hard to please.

But even while his body is honest, it isn't always nice. Vax is quick to turn to self-loathing, pulling any and all mistakes in on himself and harboring them under his ribs. He broods, and regrets, and thinks too much about things he couldn't do and people he couldn't save. Because of this, he is quick to run if the weight gets too heavy - up and leaving whenever it becomes too much to bear, avoiding problems entirely, if he can. He is quick on his feet, dexterous in his movements, and that counts towards adversity as much as it does fists. This tends to lend itself heavily to the fact he is not quick to trust, and even harder to force to open up, comfortable in the dark cage he's built around himself and his sister.

Because of this, he has a history of finding it difficult to settle, or feel like he belongs. After spending most of his life on the run with his sister, he has always found great pride in the fact he is indebted and connected to no one. But with Vox Machina - and even more so, the Raven Queen - Vax has found himself with a purpose, a reason, a motivation to do the things he does. And despite his best efforts, he finds a kind of comfort knowing that he has a direction now, no matter how he might have tripped into the role. No matter what might befall his family, or him, he always will have his mission - to stop those who sidestep destiny for their own ends (much like he had done) and seek to evade death. Which in many ways is ironic, considering how quick Vax has always been to jump into danger to save those he cares about, but there had always been the fact that he accepted that fate. He respected what would happen, should it do so. If he died, he would die, and that would be his end.

If it was his sister, however - that's a different story.

Where he is now, his world has expanded a bit. He and his family - an odd group of adventures that, despite the odds, have all remained close and dear - have just saved the world against a conclave of dragons. Have just defeated the worst evil they could imagine, just saved their home from complete devastation, and now it is time to rest. To rest, and to spend some time with what is - arguably - the brightest thing in Vax's life.

For all that Vax is dark - brooding, shadowed, violent, and dangerous - he has fallen in love. Not only that, but with someone who has reminded him what it really is like to be happy. To be bright, to laugh, and to see outside of the shadows. For Vax, his heart is a slow moving process, slower even than his ability to trust. His feelings for Keyleth took a while to progress, months of adventures and seeing her stick to her mission and ideals, his respect grew into something more. He accepted his love for Keyleth, and after one of his closest encounters with death, shared it with her alongside the understanding that she could take, and should take, as long as she needed before they did anything about it. It was, for Vax, one of those moments where his heart crawled out from his sleeve to his hands, and he handed it over directly to her.

Keyleth, also with Percy, Pike, Grog, Scanlan, and Tarry, are the main reason that Vax has been able to come out of his shell at all - to open his heart to a family, despite the odds. Despite the ups and downs. They are his, now, and he will give his life for them, and that - above all else - has allowed Vax to become the person he is today.
POWERS: ** as he is a character in a D&D game, a lot of his abilities are directly connected to gameplay purposes. I've tried my best to restructure their explanation, but if you have any questions or would prefer to say 'this doesn't apply in this setting' that is fine! I'm happy to default to your discretion!
>> Darkvision (can see up to 60 ft in the dark)
>> can't be put to sleep by magic (fey ancestry)
>> is extremely skilled with weapons, particularly daggers.
>> dexterous/is very skilled with avoiding attacks.
>> basic healing powers (lay on hands - connected to his connection with The Raven Queen, can be regained)
OTHER:

GAME INFO;

MAGIC ABILITY: Flight, via large black wings that can appear and disappear at will. Granted, this grants him no additional abilities regarding handling thin air, falling too quickly, etc.
PRICE: Simon :c his silver belt in the shape of a snake, which turns into a snake that he can command when he takes it off.
ACCLIMATION: 9-10. Vax'ildan comes from a world where he has had to, with some consistency, jump from world to world in order to complete tasks to save his world. As far as he's concerned, this is just another mess he's ended up in. It's not the first time a powerful being asked him to do tasks against his will in a weird place he's never been to or seen before.
